Walking Backwards
Grand Tours, Minor Visitations, Miraculous Journeys, and a Few Good Meals
Mark Frutkin, 2011
A work of non-fiction that is subtitled: Grand Tours, Minor Visitations, Miraculous Journeys and a Few Good Meals. The book explores my personal travels, throughout the many years of my life to such destinations as Istanbul, New Delhi, Boulder, Venice, Paris, Rome, Ribadesella (Spain), Cremona and Mantua (Italy), Munich, Assisi and Greece. The book starts with a trip on a train with a couple of college friends from the school we were attending in Rome, Italy. We traveled from Vienna to Istanbul and on the train met a Jordanian guy working in London. He passed around a bottle of whiskey and easily convinced us to each carry a bolt of cloth he was bringing home for family. Once we arrived in the Istanbul train station, he disappeared and we noticed that the guards were checking everyone very carefully. But, with great luck, our American passports gained us easy entry with no checking of our knapsacks at all. This is just one example of the typical stories covered in this book.
