Since all writing is part-invention, part-sincerity and part-play-acting, getting a triangulation on ‘truth’ is not a top priority. What interests me more is how the author attempts to portray a reality outside of the common forms of fiction, unrestrained by plot, jumping here and there in daily life, recording, documenting and staying open to all contingencies. Past masters and mistresses of this form are many: W.G. Sebald, Virginia Woolf, Elias Canetti and Anaïs Nin are just a handful of examples. Yet the epistolary, the diaristic and the memoir forms by current practitioners are proving to be very much alive and kicking.
