In this biography I concentrate on connections between Poe’s life and his poems and tales, his fascination with marriage. Though most marriages he knew were failures, he never lost his belief in the ideal of marriage. Many events of his life, transformed by his imagination, became the stuff of his horror and detective fiction. The loss of his fiancée Elmira Royster in 1827, haunted him throughout his life, as did the death his beautiful mother, Eliza Arnold Poe, in 1811. I am interested in the family secret Poe claimed but never revealed, and the ethnicity of his mother and his major fictional heroines.
