Daniel Francis
Born and raised in Vancouver, Daniel Francis has lived in North Vancouver for the past thirty years. He is the author of thirty books, principally about Canadian, British Columbian and Vancouver history. They cover a diverse range of subjects from prostitution in his native city to the stereotyping of First Nations to the history of world whaling, and are recognized for combining engaging narrative with the investigation of deeper historical themes. He also writes for young readers; his illustrated history of BC for young people, Far West (Harbour Publishing), remained on the bestsellers list for many weeks. While many of his books deal with national themes, he is also a history “locavore” who believes that telling local stories is a crucial part of building strong communities. His latest books are Where Mountains Meet the Sea: An Illustrated History of the District of North Vancouver (Harbour 2016) and Becoming Vancouver: A History (Harbour 2021).
