Wicked Plants
The Weed That Killed Lincoln's Mother and Other Botanical Atrocities
Amy Stewart, 2009
The full title of this book is ‘Wicked Plants: The A-Z of plants that kill, maim, intoxicate and otherwise offend’, which I think is awesome! It has plants, which cause all of the results in the title and includes beautiful drawings and Latin names for everything. If I’m short on ideas for my next murder mystery, it’s a great place to start!
A is for Arsenic
The Poisons of Agatha Christie
Kathryn Harkup, 2015
Agatha Christie is my crime-writing inspiration and she was an expert with poisons. I have to confess to liking poison myself as a murder weapon, although it’s harder to find them these days as so many have been banned! This book explores the science behind the stories alongside real-life cases, and it’s a fascinating read for any murder mystery fan.
Sad Cypress
A Hercule Poirot Mystery
Agatha Christie, 2011
I have to include an Agatha Christie in this list, and this one has a plant on the cover so it seemed like a good choice! It does, of course, involve a murder by poison and the inimitable Hercule Poirot. I have a hard time deciding whether Poirot or Miss Marple is my favourite, but I’ll go for Miss Marple as I like books about old ladies and murder…
Recipes for Murder: 66 Dishes That Celebrate the Mysteries of Agatha Christie
Karen Pierce, 2023
This book contains ‘66 dishes that celebrate the mysteries of Agatha Christie’. So, if you’d like to find out how to make everything from a perfect cup of tea to a sixpence blackbird pie, this is the book for you! My personal favourite is the gingerbread loaf – you’ll have to read my book ‘The Botanist’ to find out why….
How to Survive a Classic Crime Novel
Kate Jackson, 2023
This wacky and wonderful book gives you all the tips you’ll need to avoid being a murder victim whether you’re on holiday, at work or in your own home. First and foremost, of course, is how to avoid being poisoned from your own kitchen, but I also like the chapter about how to dispose of a body…
The Botanist
The First ‘Twist in the Tale’ Novel
Anne Wedgwood, 2023
This is my first book, and yes, there’s poison involved, as well as a few plants on the cover. It’s not really a spoiler since it’s clear from the start that Lilian is a murderer – the question is, how many people did she kill? And why did she kill them? And will she get away with it? The book flips back and forth in time, revealing Lilian’s past alongside the police investigation in the present. It’s a murder mystery with a Twist in the Tale in more ways than one…
