This is the first book in a four-book series and there is a graphic novel of it too! I enjoyed the magic system and Serefina's bravery. She has to overcome a difficult childhood as well as find her way in the world. It has a beautiful historical setting as well. I love books with strong female characters.

Willa of the Wood

The first book in a two-book series by the same author. Willa is the clan's best thief and must go at night to steal from the day folk to help her people. She must be brave and learn that not all “day” people are bad. Love the magic system, the bravery, and the character growth in these books.

Witchlings

A beautifully written book by a Latinx author. I live the bravery of Seven who is placed in the lower coven and learns that friendship is the most powerful gift. It's fun, with quirky characters, and great for a young reader.

The Awakening Storm: A Graphic Novel (City of Dragons #1)

I wanted to include a graphic novel in this list as there are so many children for whom this is the best way to read. This is the first of three graphic novels in this series. I love diverse books and settings. This book takes place in Hong Kong where Gace becomes the keeper of a dragon. It’s a good adventure for any young child and talks about the complicated issues of parents who remarry.

A kid, thrust into the world of gods and monsters, what’s not to like? There’s action, adventure, magic, and humor. I thought I’d throw in a book with a boy main character. If you like this one, there are about six more, plus movies and spin-off books.
