Dead Hand
Valerie Nieman, June 7, 2024
o This is my latest, a sequel to To the Bones. I couldn’t let the story of Darrick and Lourana remain unresolved, and enjoyed revisiting some favorite haunts in Ireland for the bulk of the action.
In the Lonely Backwater
Valerie Nieman, 2022
This book is close to my heart, the story of outsider and science geek Maggie dealing with abandonment, alcoholism, and, oh, yes, the mysterious death of her beautiful cousin. Good thing she has Linnaeus to lean on.
To the Bones
Valerie Nieman, 2019
As a journalist in West Virginia for many years, I knew the coal industry from many angles and saw its depredations on the land and the lives of the people. Rather than telling another grim story, I decided to approach it slant in this folk horror/Appalachian/ecojustice tale.
Leopard Lady
A Life in Verse
Valerie Nieman, 2018
This book started with a rush of poems and fragments one evening. I spent ten years listening for that voice, learning the story of Dinah and The Professor. I had no acquaintance with the world of the freak show, no reason for the Leopard Lady to begin to speak through me, but I was blessed by this visitation.
Blood Clay
Valerie Nieman, 2011
My first North Carolina book, set in tobacco country as farms are being supplanted by housing developments. A newcomer becomes a pariah when she fails to save a child’s life, finding a friend only in a man who wanted desperately to leave but was forced back to his childhood home.
Hotel Worthy
Valerie Nieman, 2015
This collection of poems covers a lot of ground, from the remains of a marriage to the deep secrets of the painted caves of the Perigord.
Fidelities
Valerie Nieman, 2004
Most of these short stories are set in West Virginia, drawing on my years farming, trout fishing, and woods wandering.
Neena Gathering
Valerie Newman, 2013
My first novel, a post-apocalyptic love story set in the area around my West Virginia hill farm. I wrote it when I didn’t really know how to go about making a novel but the book still has fans! The book did well and after going out of print was brought back as a paperback, ebook, and audiobook in 2012.
