Our Transgenic Future

Spider Goats, Genetic Modification, and the Will to Change Nature

This book explores a three-year ethnographic study I conducted about transgenic goats in Utah. These are goats that are transgenically engineered with Golden Orb Weaver Spider DNA so that the goat lactates a spider silk protein. This protein is then used to make products of a fabric that is both strong and flexible. I trace the story of the goats with my own coming to terms with bioethics, motherhood, reproduction and animal husbandry.

Another ethnography that follows the human use of horseshoe crabs, an ancient species of arthropod that is used in the biopharmaceutical industry. I conducted research in New York City, Florida, and Japan to analyze the ways in which horseshoe crabs are both threatened and tracked by conservation biologists, citizen scientists, and biomedical harvesters.

Another three-year ethnography about the rise of urban beekeeping in New York City at the height of Colony Collapse Disorder (an umbrella term to describe the decimation of bee colonies in the mid-2000s). With a fellow sociologist, I interviewed beekeepers, participated in hive checks, attended workshops, and installed beehives on my roof in Brooklyn as a way of collecting data about this offshoot of the urban homesteading movement.
