This book is about the Battle of the Wilderness, the first meeting on the battlefield between Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant. I also look at the fighting from the perspective of ordinary soldiers. This horrific event with unimaginable suffering on both sides eventually led to Union victory one year later.

Ulysses S. Grant’s incredible turnaround from 1854 until 1864 is the subject of this portrait. I also examine Grant’s connection to slavery, which was deeper than most Americans realize. His relationships with his anti-slavery father and pro-slavery wife are considered, too, in more depth than most biographies of Grant.
