He has won the Australian/Vogel Literary Award (1982), the Age Fiction Prize (1991), the National Book Council ‘Banjo’ Prize (1997), the Victorian Premier’s Award for Innovative Writing (1992), the Victorian Premier’s Award for fiction (1992, 1993 and 2003), the NSW Premier’s Award for fiction (2004), the NSW Book of the Year (2004), the Queensland Premier’s Award for fiction (2006), the Patrick White Award For Literature (2014) and The Prime Minister’s Award for Poetry (2018).
