Sleep with One Eye Open
Beau Johnston, 2014
It all began with a photo I took of Sydney’s city skyline at sunset while I was on holiday. I looked at the picture and wondered, “What would happen if the lights didn’t come on ever again?”. The next day, while wandering through the CBD, my love of zombie stories and dislike of crowds gave birth to “what would happen if zombies came pouring out of that underground railway station, at this very minute?” No access to weapons, no preparation time, and stuck in the middle of the largest city in the country. Writing this story gave me the opportunity to explore the Zombie Apocalypse from an Australian perspective. The action also takes place in obscure locations only locals are familiar with (providing a decidedly dark and twisted tour of the Australian coastline and countryside).
