Tom Brock, a twenty-five-year-old democratic socialist, despises America for what he perceives as its corruption, oppression, and failure. He blames these issues on the white patriarchy and red-state Americans. On the other hand, Tom’s grandfather, Bob, is a wealthy entrepreneur, Vietnam War veteran, and staunch conservative who loves America and disapproves of blue-state progressives. Despite never having met, Tom and Bob’s paths intersect when Bob learns about Tom’s radical politics. Bob offers Tom an unusual opportunity: to earn a $25 million inheritance, Tom must complete a cross-country road trip in Bob’s old RV. The trip follows an itinerary designed by Bob to challenge Tom’s cynical view of America. As Tom embarks on this curated grand tour of historic sites and natural wonders, he encounters people and places that challenge his deeply held worldview. Along the way, a young British woman becomes his fortuitous traveling companion, further shaping his assumptions about America’s past, present, and future.
